Luciano Papi was born and studied engineering in Italy. In Australia he added a postgraduate diploma in Technology Management from the Macquarie University Graduate School of Management to his engineering qualifications.

Lu has held senior and executive management positions since he arrived in Australia in 1977. In 1994 he formed Lu Papi & Associates, a flexible, widely networked company specialising in new product development and technology transfer. His principal interest is in innovation using emerging technologies.

Some of Lu’s major achievements are:

- The Australian Design Award in 2000 for the process development and project management of a new line of stadium seating;
- The Gold Medal at the International Exposition of Inventions in Geneva in 2000 for process development and project management to develop a pre-filled single use positive pressure syringe.
- The Macarthur Industry Award 2000 for Innovation in Industry, for a range of medical and industrial products
- The Western Sydney Industry Awards 2001: Highly Commended in the Bio-medical category
- The Western Sydney Industry Awards 2002: Winner of the Innovation Award for the “Most Outstanding Innovator”.
- The Macquarie Graduate School of Management Alumnus of the Year for 2002.
- Winner of Four Engineering Excellence Awards from Engineers Australia in 2008.

Lu is also involved with several other organisations:

Member of the University of Western Sydney’s Regional Council;

Member of the University of Western Sydney Business and Industry Advisory Panel and the UWS Women of the West assessment panel ;

Member of various design judging panels of the Australian Design Award and the Triton Foundation;

Member of the Judging Panel of the Western Sydney Industry Awards.
